The local UKRN chapter welcomes you to the Festival of Open Research, this years’ theme is Building Networks to Embed Open Research Practice. This in-person event will take place on the 11th June 2026 to highlight work at Southampton but also promote the brilliant work that is being done by colleagues at other institutions. The event is an opportunity for researchers across Southampton and further afield to discuss opportunities for Open Research.

Agenda
9:15-10:00 Refreshments & Welcome
10:00-10:45 TBC
11:00-11:45 Open Science and You: an interactive session from the Physical Sciences Data InfrastructureÂ
13:00-13:50 Keynote Talk: “Don’t ask what you can do for Open Research…” | Professor Marcus Munafò, University of Bath
The benefits of Open Research are often framed in moral terms – that the public should have access to research that they fund, for example. This is entirely valid, but moral arguments are only part of the study. I will explore the instrumental reasons for investing in and supporting Open Research – run other words, what Open Research can do for us (both those in academia and the general public). In principle, this framing should help demonstrate the potential for a return on any investment in Open Research.
14:00-14:50 Bring and (Data Share): Interactive Workshop | Dr Hayward Godwin & Dr Haden Dewis, School of Psychology, University of Southampton
Bring your own data to this session and learn how to share it in a manner that is accessible and open! We will cover ways to store, organize, and share your data openly following the ‘Find It – Access It – Reuse It’ scorecard developed here at Southampton. Prior knowledge of Microsoft Excel is preferable, but rules can be applied to all data software.
15:00-15:50 Careers and Skills for Data-driven Research(CaSDaR) | Isobel Stark, Project Co-Lead & Head of Research Data and Intellectual Property, University of Southampton
16:00 Hack-A-Paper: Interactive Workshop | Professor Christian Bokhove, Southampton Education School, University of Southampton
It can be quite challenging to reproduce findings in journal articles. In this session we will together reproduce the findings of a journal article with data and code available on the Open Science Framework. Although some knowledge of statistical packages is useful, we will also collaborative reproduce the findings, so there is plenty to learn for everyone. You will feel a great sense of achievement reproducing the main findings!
